Explore the Parrots Parakeets and Allies Collection
East Africa hosts only one parakeet the rose-ringed parakeet, an introduced species now established around Nairobi and other urban centers.
These noisy, green Asian natives escaped captivity and now breed wild, roosting in city parks and raiding fruit trees. Native parrots fill the parakeet niche naturally: the brown-headed parrot inhabits woodlands, and orange-bellied parrots raid fig trees in forests.
Meyer’s parrots are common in miombo woodlands of southern Tanzania. The endangered grey parrot occurs in western Uganda’s forests. Red-headed lovebirds brighten dry thornbush with their vibrant plumage and chattering calls.
